On April 1, 2014, Enderby & District Financial (Enderby Financial) celebrated its one anniversary as part of First West Credit Union, one of the province’s leading financial cooperatives.

Over the past 12 months, Enderby Financial members and the Enderby region have seen numerous times the benefits of the First West model, which preserves its regional brands’ names, local leadership and community connections while providing the support and strength offered by being part of a larger, stronger financial institution.

“There’s been a lot achieved in the past 12 months but there are two real highlights for me,” says Launi Skinner, First West’s CEO. “First, the Enderby team has been able to create real value for their members; they’ve been able to put money back in the pockets of members and small business owners through their incredible no- and low-fee accounts.  Second, Enderby Financial has been able to grow its business right in Enderby. To me that says a lot about the business potential in small communities and how this team is so well connected to it.”

Reflecting on Enderby & District Financial’s decision to join First West, it is evident it was the “right choice,” says Quention Bruns a former Enderby & District Credit Union board chair and now an advisor to the credit union’s local regional council.

“Joining First West was a hard choice, but it was the right choice,” says Bruns. “It has allowed us to remain strong and sustainable while delivering on our promise to serve our members. What we’ve been able to bring to our members and the community in just the first year of partnership shows we made the right decision.”

Enderby & District Financial 2013 highlights:

  • Introduced Enderby residents to no-fee banking with the Simply Free Account
  • Brought low-fee unlimited chequing to business members with the Unlimited Chequing For Business account
  • Introduced two new innovative savings accounts: Home Sweet Bonus and After Grad Bonus
  • Unveiled the half-million dollar Enderby Financial Community Endowment, which has grown to $559,000 in the first year ahead of the first grants scheduled for the coming fall
  • Targeted the problem of hunger in Enderby and region with the unveiling of the Feed the Valley program

“What can I say: Enderby loves its credit union,” says Enderby Financial branch manager Dave Williamson. “They love the community-focus and the familiarity. Becoming part of First West deepened that community connection even further because we’re now able to do what we could only dream of doing in the past.”
